Sidewalk Snow Removal

Since our recent snowfall, we have been receiving questions with regard to removal of snow and ice on the Village sidewalks. Please see the excerpt below from the Village code, It is the joint and several obligation of the owner and occupant of every parcel of real estate adjoining a public sidewalk in the Village of Chatham, whether the parcel of real estate is occupied by a structure or not, to keep such sidewalk free from snow and ice for the full paved length and width of such sidewalk.                                                      B.Time limit. Snow and ice shall be removed within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall or after the snow has been deposited on such sidewalk.                                                                                                    C. Severe icing. In the case that snow and ice on any sidewalk shall be frozen so hard that it cannot be removed without injury to the sidewalk, the owner and occupant of the real property shall spread sand, salt, sawdust, or other suitable material on the sidewalk within the time period specified under Subsection B above. As soon as is practical thereafter, the sidewalk shall be completely cleared of such snow and ice.                                                                                                        The code can be viewed in it’s entirety here on the Village website in Departments > Building and Zoning > Zoning (located at the bottom of the Building and Zoning page) > click the link for code e360.com. Wholesale Rain Barrels

After hearing from a number of village residents, it appears that there is enough interest for us to be able to get the wholesale price on rain barrels. If you are interested, please call the Village of Chatham Clerk’s Office at (518) 392-5821 or email and let us know how many you would like. The rain barrels hold 55 gallons and are 26″ wide and 34″ tall. The wholesale price, including freight is $58.50 each and is payable upon delivery. On another website, these same rain barrels cost more than $90, so this is a great deal.

Shovel Sidewalks

As mentioned in the Winter Newsletter, we are all responsible to clear our sidewalks 24 hours after the snow stops falling.  If your sidewalk is not cleared and the DPW clears it, you will be charged a fee.  Please, take the time to clear your sidewalks.

Frozen Water Pipe Prevention Suggestions

The temperatures continue to be extremely low causing many residents and businesses to have problems with freezing pipes.  We have a few suggestions and/or recommendations to help prevent your pipes from freezing:

Keep your cabinet doors open or ajar to allow for heat flow.  It is best to have heat in your basement since that is where most water pipes are located.  If you think you are already having a problem with freezing, allow for a constant stream of running water in the faucet at least as thick as a pencil or 1/4″ thick (per DPW).  If you own a vacant house, we recommend turning the heat on to prevent your pipes from freezing or call the DPW to have the water turned off at the curb to prevent freezing of the pipes.

If your pipes do freeze or you think you have a possibility of frozen pipes, you can contact the DPW to come to your house to assist you (even if just recommendations).  The DPW phone number is (518) 392-2525.

CodeRed Alerts

CodeRED Alerts:  We are finding, with the need to notify residents of emergency situations in the Village, that not all people have access to a computer for Facebook or the website.  Because of this, we are planning to use the Columbia County 911 as a means to notify people through home telephone or cell phone alerts.  This would require people to either go online at www.columbiacounty911.com/codered.html  to sign-up for alerts or to sign up at the annual Columbia County Fair at the Columbia County 911 Booth.  If you are unable to access a computer or get to the Fair, forms will be available at the Village Clerk’s window and we can process the forms online for you.  Please contact Debra Meyers, Village Clerk, with questions at .
